Safety: any work on your home’s 220 V wiring should be done by a qualified electrician with the main switch off.
Two familiar problems
It happens in almost every home: someone switches the motor on and forgets it, the roof tank overflows, and electricity is wasted. The opposite problem is just as common. When the underground reservoir or the supply line is empty, the motor keeps running dry, which can overheat and damage it.
Step 1: an automatic water level controller
This is the most effective and cheapest fix, and it doesn’t need to be smart at all. A sensor or float in the roof tank switches the motor on when the water drops below a set level and off when the tank is full. Add a second sensor in the underground reservoir and the motor won’t start when there is no water to pump, which protects it from running dry.
Step 2: add smart control
- A Wi-Fi level controller or a smart relay lets you see on your phone whether the motor is running and switch it off from anywhere.
- Set timers to match the hours when water comes through the supply line in your area.
- Some controllers also show the tank level on your phone.
The most important warning: current
A motor draws several times its running current at the moment it starts. A 1 HP motor draws roughly 1,000 W while running, but the start-up surge is far higher. Never plug a motor straight into a smart plug, not even a 16 A one. The right way is a contactor or starter rated for the motor, switched by the smart relay or level controller. Have an electrician do this work.
Power cuts
Before buying, check what the controller does when power returns. A good controller checks the tank level again and won’t start the motor if the tank is already full.
In apartment buildings
In many buildings the caretaker or owner runs the motor. Suggest one level controller for the whole building. It saves water and electricity, and nobody has to stand by the motor.
