আমাদের বিদ্যুতের ধরন
বাংলাদেশে বাসার বিদ্যুৎ ২২০ ভোল্ট, ৫০ হার্টজ। কিন্তু বাস্তবে সন্ধ্যায় ভোল্টেজ কমে যায়, বিদ্যুৎ ফেরার মুহূর্তে হঠাৎ ধাক্কা আসে, আর বর্ষায় বজ্রপাতে লাইনে সার্জ আসে। স্মার্ট ডিভাইসের ভেতরের ইলেকট্রনিক্স এসবের প্রতি সংবেদনশীল।
কেনার আগে লেবেল পড়ুন
- পণ্যের গায়ে বা বক্সে ইনপুট ভোল্টেজ দেখুন। “100–240V ~ 50/60Hz” লেখা থাকলে যন্ত্রটি আমাদের লাইনে চলবে, আর কিছুটা ওঠানামাও সামলাতে পারে।
- “110V” বা “120V” লেখা যন্ত্র আমাদের ২২০ ভোল্ট লাইনে সরাসরি লাগালে পুড়ে যাবে। অনলাইনে অনেক স্মার্ট প্লাগ আমেরিকান সংস্করণে বিক্রি হয়, যেগুলোর পিন দুটি চ্যাপ্টা। এগুলো এড়িয়ে চলুন।
- প্লাগের ধরন মিলিয়ে নিন: আমাদের সকেটে সাধারণত গোল দুই পিন বা তিন পিনের প্লাগ চলে। অ্যাডাপ্টারের সংযোগ ঢিলা হলে তা গরম হয়ে যেতে পারে।
ঘরে সুরক্ষা
- কম্পিউটার, রাউটার আর চার্জারের জন্য সার্জ প্রটেকশনযুক্ত এক্সটেনশন বোর্ড ব্যবহার করুন। সাধারণ মাল্টিপ্লাগ সার্জ থেকে রক্ষা করে না; বক্সে “surge protection” লেখা আছে কি না দেখে নিন; সাধারণত এর সঙ্গে জুল এককে রেটিংও লেখা থাকে।
- ফ্রিজ বা এসির মতো বড় যন্ত্রে ভোল্টেজ স্টেবিলাইজার বা প্রটেক্টর ব্যবহার করা হয়; স্মার্ট প্লাগ বা বাল্বের জন্য সাধারণত এটি লাগে না।
- ঝড়-বজ্রপাতের আভাস পেলে আগেই দামি যন্ত্র আর রাউটারের প্লাগ খুলে রাখুন। বজ্রপাত শুরু হয়ে গেলে প্লাগ, তার বা প্লাগে লাগানো যন্ত্র স্পর্শ করবেন না।
- পুরো বাসার জন্য ডিস্ট্রিবিউশন বোর্ডে সার্জ প্রটেকশন ডিভাইস (এসপিডি) বসানো যায়, তবে ঠিকমতো কাজ করতে এর ভালো আর্থিং লাগে; ইলেকট্রিশিয়ানের সঙ্গে কথা বলুন।
বিদ্যুৎ ফেরার মুহূর্তটি সামলান
বিদ্যুৎ ফেরার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সব যন্ত্র একসঙ্গে চালু হলে লাইনে চাপ পড়ে। ভারী যন্ত্রের স্মার্ট প্লাগে পাওয়ার-অন সেটিং “বন্ধ” রাখুন, আর বিদ্যুৎ ফেরার এক-দুই মিনিট পরে নিজে চালু করুন। ফ্রিজের ক্ষেত্রে এটি করবেন না, কারণ বিদ্যুৎ ফিরলে ফ্রিজ নিজে থেকেই চালু হওয়া দরকার; ফ্রিজের জন্য বরং দেরিতে চালু হওয়ার সুবিধাসহ (টাইম ডিলে) ভোল্টেজ প্রটেক্টর ব্যবহার করুন।
অ্যাম্পিয়ার রেটিং
বেশিরভাগ স্মার্ট প্লাগ ১০ অ্যাম্পিয়ারের, অর্থাৎ ২২০ ভোল্টে সর্বোচ্চ প্রায় ২,২০০ ওয়াট। অনেক গিজার ও রুম হিটার এর কাছাকাছি বা বেশি বিদ্যুৎ নেয়; এগুলোর জন্য ১৬ অ্যাম্পিয়ার রেটিংয়ের প্লাগ ও সকেট লাগে। যন্ত্রের গায়ে লেখা ওয়াট প্লাগের সীমার চেয়ে যথেষ্ট কম কি না মিলিয়ে নিন।
নিরাপত্তা: বাসার ২২০ ভোল্ট লাইনে যেকোনো কাজ মেইন সুইচ বন্ধ করে একজন দক্ষ ইলেকট্রিশিয়ানকে দিয়ে করান।
Safety: any work on your home’s 220 V wiring should be done by a qualified electrician with the main switch off.
Our power supply
Mains power in Bangladesh is 220 V, 50 Hz. In practice the voltage drops in the evening, there is a sudden jolt when power returns, and lightning in the monsoon sends surges down the line. The electronics inside smart devices are sensitive to all of these.
Read the label before you buy
- Check the input voltage on the product or box. “100–240V ~ 50/60Hz” means it will work on our supply and tolerate some fluctuation.
- A device marked “110V” or “120V” will burn out if plugged straight into our 220 V supply. Many smart plugs sold online are the American version with two flat pins. Avoid them.
- Match the plug type: our sockets usually take round two-pin or three-pin plugs. A loose adapter connection can heat up.
Protection at home
- Use an extension board with surge protection for the computer, router and chargers. A plain multi-plug offers no surge protection; look for “surge protection” on the box, usually with a rating in joules.
- Large appliances such as fridges and air conditioners use a voltage stabiliser or protector. Smart plugs and bulbs usually don’t need one.
- When a thunderstorm is forecast or approaching, unplug expensive devices and the router before it arrives. Once lightning has started, do not touch plugs, cords or plugged-in equipment.
- A surge protection device (SPD) can be fitted at the distribution board to protect the whole home, but it needs a good earth connection to work properly. Ask your electrician.
Handle the moment power returns
When everything switches on at once as power returns, the line takes a hit. Set heavy appliances on smart plugs to stay off after a power cut, and switch them back on yourself a minute or two after the supply returns. Do not do this for a fridge, which needs to come back on by itself; protect it instead with a voltage protector that has a built-in start delay.
Current rating
Most smart plugs are rated at 10 A, which is about 2,200 W at 220 V. Many geysers and room heaters draw close to or above that and need a 16 A plug and socket. Check that the wattage on your appliance is comfortably below the plug’s limit.
