Smart Climate Control Automations

Running a ceiling fan in an empty room is a waste of energy. To maximize comfort and efficiency, you should automate your fans to turn on only when the room is occupied and the temperature reaches a specific threshold. Here is how to build this smart automation.

Required Hardware

  • A smart ceiling fan (or a standard fan connected to a smart switch).
  • A smart motion sensor.
  • A smart temperature sensor (like the Aqara Temp Sensor).
  • A smart home hub (Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or Home Assistant).

The Automation Rule

Configure this rule in your smart hub app:

  • Trigger: Motion detected in the room.
  • Condition: Room temperature is above 74°F (23.5°C).
  • Action: Turn on the ceiling fan to Medium speed.
  • Safety Rule: Turn the fan off if no motion is detected for 15 minutes.
