নিউট্রাল তার কেন জরুরি
সাধারণ সুইচ শুধু লাইনের সংযোগ জোড়া দেয় বা কেটে দেয়; নিজে চলার জন্য এর কোনো বিদ্যুৎ লাগে না। স্মার্ট সুইচের ভেতরে একটি ছোট ওয়াই-ফাই যন্ত্র থাকে, যেটিকে সারাক্ষণ চালু থাকতে হয়। এর জন্য ফেজ (লাইভ) তারের সঙ্গে একটি নিউট্রাল তারও দরকার হয়। তাই বেশিরভাগ স্মার্ট সুইচের মডেল “with neutral” বা নিউট্রালসহ।
আমাদের বাসায় সাধারণত কী থাকে
বাংলাদেশের অনেক বাসায় সুইচ বোর্ডে সুইচের পাশাপাশি একটি সকেট বা ফ্যানের রেগুলেটর থাকে। বোর্ডে সকেট থাকলে সেখানে নিউট্রাল তার আসা প্রায় নিশ্চিত। কিন্তু দরজার পাশের আলাদা ছোট সুইচে বা পুরোনো ভবনের কিছু বোর্ডে শুধু ফেজ তার থাকতে পারে।
কীভাবে নিশ্চিত হবেন
- নিজে বোর্ড খুলবেন না। একজন ইলেকট্রিশিয়ানকে মেইন সুইচ বন্ধ করে বোর্ড খুলে টেস্টার দিয়ে দেখতে বলুন।
- পুরোনো ভবনে তারের রং সবসময় নিয়ম মেনে লাগানো থাকে না, তাই শুধু রং দেখে সিদ্ধান্ত নেবেন না।
- একই সঙ্গে বোর্ডের মাপ নিন। স্মার্ট সুইচের প্যানেল নির্দিষ্ট মাপের হয় (৮৬ মিলিমিটার বর্গাকার বেশ প্রচলিত)। আমাদের অনেক বোর্ড নিজস্ব মাপে বানানো, তাই নতুন বক্স বা অন্য ধরনের সমাধান লাগতে পারে।
নিউট্রাল থাকলে
নিউট্রালসহ স্মার্ট সুইচ বেছে নিন। এগুলো বেশি নির্ভরযোগ্য, আর এগুলোর সঙ্গে কম ওয়াটের এলইডি বাতিও মিটমিট করে না। বোর্ডের মাপ না মিললে পুরো বোর্ড না বদলে সুইচের পেছনে বসানো ছোট স্মার্ট রিলে মডিউল ব্যবহার করা যায়; এতে আপনার পুরোনো সুইচই থাকে, শুধু স্মার্ট নিয়ন্ত্রণ যোগ হয়। এর জন্যও সাধারণত নিউট্রাল আর বক্সের ভেতরে জায়গা লাগে।
নিউট্রাল না থাকলে
- “No neutral” লেখা স্মার্ট সুইচ পাওয়া যায়, তবে কম ওয়াটের এলইডি বাতি মিটমিট করা বা পুরোপুরি নিভে না যাওয়ার সমস্যা হতে পারে। অনেক সময় বাতির কাছে একটি ছোট বাইপাস বসাতে হয়।
- সবচেয়ে সহজ বিকল্প: সুইচ না বদলে স্মার্ট বাল্ব ব্যবহার করুন, আর সুইচটি সবসময় চালু রাখুন।
- দেয়ালের পাইপে জায়গা থাকলে ইলেকট্রিশিয়ান বোর্ড পর্যন্ত নিউট্রাল তার টেনে দিতে পারেন। এটিই স্থায়ী সমাধান।
ফ্যানের জন্য আলাদা নিয়ম
সাধারণ স্মার্ট সুইচ দিয়ে ফ্যান চালু-বন্ধ করা যায়, কিন্তু গতি কমানো-বাড়ানো যায় না। সাধারণ সিলিং ফ্যানের গতি নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে চাইলে ফ্যানের জন্য বানানো স্মার্ট রেগুলেটর কিনুন। বিএলডিসি ফ্যান আলাদা: এর নিজস্ব রিমোট বা কন্ট্রোলার থাকে, তাই এটি সরাসরি সুইচে লাগাতে হয়, কোনো রেগুলেটরের মধ্য দিয়ে নয়। বাতির ডিমার কখনো ফ্যানে লাগাবেন না।
নিরাপত্তা: বাসার ২২০ ভোল্ট লাইনে যেকোনো কাজ মেইন সুইচ বন্ধ করে একজন দক্ষ ইলেকট্রিশিয়ানকে দিয়ে করান।
Safety: any work on your home’s 220 V wiring should be done by a qualified electrician with the main switch off.
Why the neutral wire matters
An ordinary switch simply makes or breaks the circuit and needs no power of its own. A smart switch has a small Wi-Fi module inside that must stay powered all the time. For that it needs a neutral wire as well as the phase (live) wire, which is why most smart switch models are the “with neutral” type.
What most homes here have
In many Bangladeshi homes the switchboard also holds a socket or a fan regulator. If there is a socket on the board, a neutral wire almost certainly reaches it. But a small separate switch by the door, or some boards in older buildings, may have only the phase wire.
How to check
- Don’t open the board yourself. Ask an electrician to switch off the main breaker, open the board and check with a tester.
- In older buildings wire colours don’t always follow the standard, so don’t decide on colour alone.
- Measure the board at the same time. Smart switch panels come in fixed sizes (86 mm square is common). Many boards here are custom-sized, so you may need a new box or a different kind of solution.
If you have a neutral
Choose a with-neutral smart switch. They are more reliable and don’t flicker with low-wattage LED bulbs. If the panel size doesn’t fit, a small smart relay module can sit behind your existing switch instead of replacing the board; you keep your old switch and add smart control. These usually need a neutral and some space in the box too.
If there is no neutral
- No-neutral smart switches exist, but they can flicker or fail to switch fully off with low-wattage LEDs. Some need a small bypass fitted near the light.
- The easiest option: keep your switch, leave it on, and use smart bulbs instead.
- If there is room in the wall conduit, an electrician can pull a neutral wire to the board. That is the permanent fix.
Fans are different
A standard smart switch can turn a fan on and off but cannot change its speed. For speed control on an ordinary ceiling fan, buy a smart fan regulator made for ceiling fans. A BLDC fan is different: it has its own remote or controller and must be wired straight to the switch, never through any regulator. Never put a light dimmer on a fan.
