Buying in the wrong order wastes money
Many people start with expensive smart switches or cameras, then find the Wi-Fi doesn’t reach or the apps don’t match. Follow this order and nothing will need replacing later.
1. Network first
Use your phone to check that the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal is good where the devices will go. Most smart plugs and bulbs can’t join a 5 GHz network. Buy a mini UPS for the router (and the ONU, on fibre internet) at this stage too.
2. Pick one app family
Many budget devices on the market run on a handful of apps. Mixing devices from different apps makes it hard to link them into automations. Before buying the next device, check that it works in the same app as your first one. A “Matter” logo on the box means the device can work with platforms from different companies, such as Google Home, Alexa or Apple Home, though this usually needs a compatible hub or smart speaker; when prices are close, choose the Matter one.
3. First purchase: a smart plug or an IR blaster
These give the most value for the money. A smart plug puts a fan or lamp on a timer; an IR blaster runs the AC and TV from your phone. Use it for a few weeks and see what your family actually uses.
4. Then bulbs, switches and sensors
- Smart bulbs in rooms where you want lights on a schedule.
- Smart switches once an electrician has checked the wiring (is there a neutral wire?).
- Finally, security devices such as door and motion sensors. A gas detector is the exception: if you cook with gas, buy one first, smart or not.
What to avoid
- Cameras that only work with a monthly subscription.
- No-name devices with no app updates and no seller address.
- 110 V or 120 V American versions.
When you buy
Buy from a seller who offers a local warranty, keep the receipt, and test the device at home within the return period.
