বাংলাদেশে গত কয়েক বছরে বাসা, মসজিদ ও বিভিন্ন ভবনে জমে থাকা গ্যাসের বিস্ফোরণে বহু মানুষ মারা গেছেন। লাইনের গ্যাস হোক বা সিলিন্ডারের এলপিজি, ছোট লিক থেকেই বিপদ শুরু হয়। একটি গ্যাস ডিটেক্টর আপনি ঘুমিয়ে থাকলেও বা গন্ধ টের না পেলেও সতর্ক করতে পারে, আর স্মার্ট ডিটেক্টর বাসায় কেউ না থাকলেও ফোনে জানায়।
আপনার গ্যাসের ধরন বুঝে ডিটেক্টর বসান
- লাইনের প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাস (মিথেন) বাতাসের চেয়ে হালকা, তাই ওপরে উঠে জমে। এর ডিটেক্টর চুলার কাছে, ছাদের কাছাকাছি উঁচুতে বসান।
- সিলিন্ডারের এলপিজি বাতাসের চেয়ে ভারী, তাই মেঝের কাছে জমে। এর ডিটেক্টর চুলা বা সিলিন্ডারের কাছে, মেঝে থেকে অল্প উঁচুতে বসান।
- কেনার সময় দেখুন ডিটেক্টরটি আপনার গ্যাস শনাক্ত করে কি না; কিছু মডেল দুটোই পারে। সঠিক উচ্চতা ও দূরত্বের জন্য নির্মাতার নির্দেশনা মেনে চলুন।
ধোঁয়া ও তাপের অ্যালার্ম
শোবার ঘরের কাছের করিডোরের ছাদে একটি ধোঁয়ার অ্যালার্ম বসান, আর বসার ঘরের ছাদে আরেকটি। রান্নাঘরে ধোঁয়ার অ্যালার্ম বারবার ভুল সংকেত দেয়; সেখানে তাপ শনাক্তকারী হিট অ্যালার্ম বেশি উপযোগী।
স্মার্ট হলে বাড়তি যা পাবেন
- বাসায় কেউ না থাকলেও ফোনে সতর্কবার্তা।
- পরিবারের একাধিক সদস্যের ফোনে একসঙ্গে বার্তা।
- লাইনের গ্যাসে স্বয়ংক্রিয় শাট-অফ ভাল্ভ যুক্ত করা যায়, যা লিক ধরা পড়লে গ্যাস বন্ধ করে দেয়। এটি শুধু অনুমোদিত টেকনিশিয়ানকে দিয়ে বসাবেন।
তবে যেকোনো স্মার্ট ফিচারের চেয়ে জরুরি হলো যন্ত্রটির নিজের জোরালো অ্যালার্ম, কারণ বিদ্যুৎ বা ইন্টারনেট না থাকলে ফোনে বার্তা নাও আসতে পারে। ব্যাটারি ব্যাকআপ আছে এমন মডেল বেছে নিন।
রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ
- প্রতি মাসে টেস্ট বাটন চেপে পরীক্ষা করুন।
- নির্দেশনা অনুযায়ী ব্যাটারি বদলান।
- প্রতিটি ডিটেক্টরের একটি মেয়াদ থাকে; নির্মাতার নির্ধারিত সময় পার হলে পুরো যন্ত্র বদলান।
গ্যাসের গন্ধ পেলে বা গ্যাস অ্যালার্ম বাজলে
- কোনো সুইচ চালু বা বন্ধ করবেন না, আগুন জ্বালাবেন না; সামান্য স্পার্কেও বিস্ফোরণ হতে পারে। অ্যাপ থেকে স্মার্ট প্লাগ বা লাইট চালু-বন্ধ করা আর প্লাগ খোলাও এর মধ্যে পড়ে।
- দরজা-জানালা খুলে দিন।
- চুলার চাবি আর সিলিন্ডারের রেগুলেটর বা লাইনের মেইন ভাল্ভ বন্ধ করুন।
- সবাইকে নিয়ে বাসা থেকে বের হয়ে যান।
- বাইরে গিয়ে জাতীয় জরুরি সেবা ৯৯৯-এ কল করুন, আর আপনার গ্যাস বিতরণ কোম্পানির জরুরি নম্বরে জানান (নম্বরটি সাধারণত গ্যাস বিলে লেখা থাকে)।
Why this is the most important device
In recent years gas explosions in homes, mosques and other buildings in Bangladesh have killed many people. Whether it is piped gas or an LPG cylinder, the danger starts with a small leak. A gas detector can sound the alarm even if you are asleep or do not notice the smell, and a smart detector alerts your phone even when nobody is home.
Match the detector to your gas
- Piped natural gas (methane) is lighter than air and collects near the ceiling. Mount its detector high, near the ceiling, close to the stove.
- LPG from a cylinder is heavier than air and collects near the floor. Mount its detector low, a short distance above the floor, near the stove or cylinder.
- Check that the detector senses your type of gas; some models detect both. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for exact height and distance.
Smoke and heat alarms
Put a smoke alarm on the ceiling of the corridor outside the bedrooms, and another on the living room ceiling. In the kitchen a smoke alarm gives frequent false alarms; a heat alarm works better there.
What smart adds
- An alert on your phone when nobody is home.
- Messages to several family members at once.
- On piped gas, an automatic shut-off valve can close the supply when a leak is detected. Have it fitted only by an authorised technician.
More important than any smart feature is the device’s own loud alarm, because phone alerts may not arrive if the power or internet is down. Choose a model with battery backup.
Maintenance
- Press the test button every month.
- Replace batteries as instructed.
- Every detector has a service life; replace the whole unit when the manufacturer’s stated period is up.
If you smell gas or the gas alarm sounds
- Don’t switch anything on or off and don’t light a flame; a tiny spark can cause an explosion. This includes switching smart plugs or lights from the app and pulling out plugs.
- Open doors and windows.
- Turn off the stove knobs and the cylinder regulator or the main gas valve.
- Get everyone out of the home.
- Once outside, call the national emergency number 999 and your gas company’s emergency line (usually printed on your gas bill).
