Voice-Control Your Locks Without Compromising Security
Connecting your smart lock to Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri is incredibly convenient. It allows you to lock your door as you head to bed simply by saying a voice command. However, setting this up improperly can create a security risk (e.g., an intruder yelling through an open window to unlock the door). Here is how to connect them safely.
1. Enable Voice PINs for Unlocking
Whenever you configure a smart lock to unlock via voice, you must enable a 4-digit Voice PIN in your assistant settings. The assistant will refuse to unlock the door unless you speak this PIN out loud.
2. Restrict Voice Commands to “Lock Only”
For maximum security, disable the “unlock” voice command entirely in your smart assistant app. Only allow voice commands to *lock* the door or check its status (“Is the front door locked?”).
3. Keep Smart Speakers Away from Windows
Ensure your smart speakers (Echo Dot, Google Nest Mini) are positioned deep inside the room, out of earshot from windows and doors, so outsiders cannot trigger them.
