Protect Your Smart Security Camera Privacy
Smart security cameras keep our homes safe, but because they are connected to the internet, they are potential targets for hackers. A compromised camera feed can expose your daily routine and compromise your privacy. Fortunately, securing your camera feed is easy if you follow these basic smart home cybersecurity practices.
1. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
This is the most critical step. Even if a hacker guesses or steals your password, they cannot access your camera feed without the unique verification code sent to your phone. Enable 2FA in the settings of your Ring, Nest, Eufy, or Wyze app immediately.
2. Create a Separate IoT Guest Network
Configure a secondary “Guest” Wi-Fi network on your router specifically for your smart home devices (IoT). This isolates your cameras from your primary computers, phones, and network drives, preventing hackers from accessing your personal data if a camera is compromised.
3. Turn on Automatic Firmware Updates
Manufacturers regularly release security patches to fix vulnerabilities. Keep automatic updates enabled in your camera’s app settings to ensure your device is always running the latest, most secure software.
4. Disable Remote Viewing (If Not Needed)
If you only need to view your camera feeds while at home, disable cloud access or remote viewing options. Look for cameras that support local-only storage (like RTSP or HomeKit Secure Video).
