Protect Your Exterior Security Hardware
Smart outdoor cameras face harsh conditions, from freezing winter snow to scorching summer sun. Extreme temperatures can drain batteries in hours, fog up lenses, or cause internal components to shut down. Here is how to keep your security cameras working year-round.
1. Switch to Wired Power
Lithium-ion batteries perform poorly in freezing temperatures (below 32°F / 0°C), losing their charge rapidly. If you live in a cold climate, choose hardwired cameras or run power cables to your battery cameras to ensure constant operation.
2. Install Protective Silicone Skins
Silicone covers act like jackets, protecting your cameras from direct snow, rain, and solar radiation. They also feature small hoods to prevent water droplets from blocking the camera lens.
3. Check Operating Temperature Limits
When buying cameras, verify their operating ranges. Brands like Nest and Eufy are usually rated down to -4°F (-20°C) and up to 120°F (50°C).
